I have changed where I am blogging from. My going to Kurdistan had forced me to cut some financial corners. The thirst of knowledge is in and of itself a great find. A man can loose all that he has, but his knowledge can never be taken from him. Beauty fades, power weakens, riches are spent, dust and moth can corrupt but knowledge lasts forever.
So if colleges and universities are no longer the houses of intellect then where are they? If you look back into the origins of great schools they all started out as meeting places of great minds. Those who wished to learn more spent time with those great minds and hoped to glean some of their knowledge. The places that are the closest to this now are not housed inside the walls of regulated education. Self help books are the most commonly sold educational books. Self help and motivational speakers are some of the highest paid educators. Companies will hire college graduates and then spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring in specialty trainers that can teach their educated workforce applicable knowledge that they can actually use. Put in a slightly different tone – they have to be taught how to think.I know of one school that I like to spend my time at. It is the Wizard Academy in Buda, Texas. This school has taught me more about the world around me and how to react to it then any other school has. Don't take my word for it though; check it out for yourself at www.wizardacademy.com. Now the Academy was started by an advertiser and heralds itself as a communications school. As this is its chief function most of its classes pattern itself in this manner. When you go there you will have the ability to learn more, but that is up to you.
What I am looking for now are schools that are based on this same module but teach more then communication arts. I know of some engineering think-tanks that get the best and brightest researchers together. Political entities always put think-tanks together for their causes. Then of course there are the corporate managers who are looking for better ways to run their companies. Many of these groups do what they can to approach every situation in life. On the internet you can find groups of people that are dedicated to a certain subject and have open chat forums with them. This is a great way to spread information and knowledge all over the world without restrictions of geography.
It is a great time we are living in, and one that is becoming more regulated by what you know and less by who says you know it.
My sister and I spent the last week floating around in the middle of the ocean. We decided that living in Hawaii for five years and not getting around to see the other islands was a little bit of silly that we needed to rectify. So we packed our bags, bought looser pants and headed for the buffet lines of our local cruise line. At less then $100 per day it was a really good deal. Imagine eating as much as you want whenever you wanted to while staying in a nice hotel for less then $100 per month.
The cruise that we decided to take was the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Pride of Aloha. This was a great little ship (90,000 ton displacement) that started the American Flag ships in the Hawaiian Islands. On board she had a theatre, three main restaurants, three specialty restaurants, seven bars, two pools, six hot tubs, one dance floor, and many other amenities. Of course the crown jewel of this ship is the Mandora Spa located on the fore end of deck 11. My sister and I spent many a relaxing hour and a little bit of money getting massages, baths, manicures, pedicures, facials, and detoxifications. I will let you guess which one of us got what.
Leaving the ship almost seemed like a tragedy. So Lori and I signed up for another cruise in September. This time we are going to cruise the Mediterranean. I know you are all jealous.
So for all of you land lubbers who are freezing in your igloos or boarding up your houses for the coming hurricanes, just remember that at the exact time in two months – I will be in Iraq. Now that should give you back your warm and fuzzy.
The cup of coffee that saved the world

Pondering over deep and philosophical things might be common place for college kids with to much caffeine in their system and a little knowledge under their belt but it is not the normal fare for a 6’3” career Navy man with a pension for the wild side of life. Yet it was such a night as this that a young man was struck with the idea of going to Iraq and helping out where he could. So much money has been spent on the War in Iraq that you would think the problem would be solved already. If war did not have the answer and our fighting men could not seem to bring peace then maybe something else had to be done. So with this thought in mind this young man decided to see what his friends had to say about it. Much to his delight his friends had similar trends in thought, each for their own reasons. After all the talk three of the friends decided to make this idea a reality with the help of the friendly university professor. He may not save the world, but he is going to give it a shot.
These three people who are going to help save the world are James Filibeck, Lori Lord, and Bertwin Lord who will be going to the northern region of Dohuk, Iraq to see what change they can make. Dohuk is located on the Turkish border in what is officially known as Iraqi-Kurdistan. Knowing that good ideas have to be funded the three friends talked with the people of northern Iraq and created the American Development Center with the help of the University of Dohuk. This center will start a consortium of professors, students, engineers, businessmen, and investors from all over the world. The center will concentrate on water, advanced English language, and encouraging American investment.
James Filibeck is currently working as a database administrator while obtaining his bachelors degree in management information systems. In Iraq James will lead the office of technological research.
Lori Lord is currently working as a research assistant and database developer. She has been a served most recently as a missionary for a non-denominational Christian church. Before that she has worked as an English teacher in Korea, financial consultant, tax accountant, and office manager. In Iraq Lori will lead the English language program as well as the financial aspect of the center.
Bert Lord is working as a grant writer and business consultant. Currently Bert owns and operates Trade Winds Mechanical. Bert’s background lies with the US military as a power plant generation engineer, networking engineer, and special projects. Outside of military service Bert has worked in the Level-1 communications installation and maintenance world for over 10 years. In Iraq Bert will be responsible for creating new business and acting as an engineering consultant to all new projects undertaken by the center.
Kurdistan is normally noted as the land in which those of a Kurdish heritage live. This land is located in eastern Turkey, north-western Iran, northern Iraq, and eastern Syria. The only officially recognized Kurdistan is in the northern regions of Iraq. After the first Gulf War in 1991 the Kurds in northern Iraq have lived in relative peace. Protection was offered from the skies by superior US air power. This led to the creation of a democratic government that still exists today. Now Kurdistan is asking the US for help again. This time not from the military but from companies who are willing to invest in a country that loves the US. Kurdistan is located over the third largest oil reserve in the world. The populace is educated. The people love Americans and view them as liberators. Kurdistan is opening their country to American business by offering very friendly arrangements. Kurdistan offer repatriating 100% of all profits, 10 years without having to pay taxes, and assistance from the local government to all companies that come in and help make Kurdistan an economic force in the Middle East.
The American Development Center is first and foremost a consortium of Iraqi, Kurdish, and American intellectuals. The center is focused on continued progress in the Kurdish region. Projects that the center are working on include getting pure water for school children, mapping the water supplies in Kurdistan, encouraging American business practices in Kurdistan, and acting as a project managing center for anyone interested in working in Iraq.
The center will have its educational arm and an entrepreneurial arm. The entrepreneurial arm will offer seminars, and conferences on business practices in a Democracy and free trade society. There will be professional assistance offered in advertising, profit generation, business models, business applications, website development, blog creation, and other services served upon request.
As the American Development Center is a not for profit organization anyone who want to donate any money, time, or services to the center would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in working with the center position are currently being offered as an English language teacher in two cities in Kurdistan. Candidates are required to have a bachelor’s degree in any field. The current compensation is free housing with a salary of $1,000 per month. We are amazed at the generous offer from the universities as this is more then they pay any of their professors. While working with the center you can pursue a Masters of Doctorate degree from the university that you are teaching at. This schooling will be paid by the university. The center is always working on many projects and teachers are allowed to keep all profits generated from extra employment outside of class.

In case you are wondering how my weekend was, the only thing that separates me from a teenage boy is the squeaky voice. I now have a face of acne that would make a pizza blush with shame. Of course my face has nothing to do with acne and everything to do with mosquitoes.
My great friend James came into visit me on the big island this weekend. I was staying with my brother Steve and another friend from the mainland – Chris Mollica. We all came up with the great idea of going to “The Cabin” in Hilo for the weekend. We did not know what was in store for us.
The cabin in Hilo has many fond memories. Rustically placed next to a stream on a hill overlooking the ocean the cabin was a model of simplicity. The electricity was supplied from a water turbine powered by a 120 ft waterfall. The cabin is unfinished with delightfully tacky construction and simple decorating.
SHOCK!!! No longer is this the cabin of our dreams. Rustic simplicity has given way to wood floors, and designed interior paint schemes. Good by old trusty lighting, hello ceiling fans that operate by remote control. Yet like a potpourri scented doody hanging from some giant orifice about to plop into the receptacle of our pleasant weekend it had not fully fell. Furniture and beds were not yet a part of the dec-o-corum. So we grabbed some cots and blankets and decided to sleep on the porch.
Sitting out on the porch was pleasant. We ate some sausage and cheese while drinking some soda and wine. We then decided to call it an early night and each of us went to our assigned sleeping places. That is when the assault began.
In Wisconsin mosquitoes are load and drone. In Hawaii they are silent and gentle. I guess they also love the smell and taste of Wisconsin flesh. The rain must have driven all of the mosquitoes under the cabin. One of the bored ones decided to take a small flight were he found a delightful smorgasbord of white meat that would put any buffet to shame. The four of us swatted casually throughout the night, not really sure what was happening. When we awoke in the morning we found our bodies riddled with proboscis holes. James had over 200 bites on his feet alone. Chris had bites on his forehead. Bert had bites on his hands, face, head, feet, legs, and who knows where else. Steve got a few bites on the top of his head. He had placed himself on a mattress with a sheet over him. He was also lying behind me. If you were a mosquito would you rather have juicy tenderloin or jerky? I understand the mosquito’s choice, I am just not happy about it.
So it is safe to say that our priorities in life have changed. We now can add one thing to our list of desires for a good nights sleep. “I HOPE NOTHING SUCKS ON ME ALL NIGHT.”
I try to add to my blog once a week and it is Sunday. Yet today it seems that I do not have the usual drivel to tell you about me week and all the things that are happening to me. Instead this Sunday I think I want to rant.
This rant is going to start out about me. I have been doing a lot of searching into who I am and how I deal with the world around me. I have found that for the most part I am not a very nice person. I do not suffer fools well, I am not one to take criticism at all, I do not like to be considered normal, I want to think I look at everything objectively, and I desire a place in the world. All of these things are who I am – for better or worse.
Now that I have said who I am (or am not) what am I going to do with that information? For those of you who are reading this and have not heard, I am moving to Iraqin December. I will be going there to help set up the American Development Center in Dohuk, Iraq.
My first goal is to set up a water purification research grant at five of the universities in Iraq. We will study three water purification systems (total of 15) and see which one would be better used to purify water for the youth of that area. Once we have done the study we will take that study and create a system to implement our findings into as many of the grade schools as we can. It is important that the grade schools have pure drinking water.
My second goal is to set up a water bottling plant in Dohuk, Iraq. There is a rail system being put in to Mosul and I can easily ship the bottled water to there from Dohuk by truck. Once the water is in Mosul I can easily ship the bottled water anywhere in Iraq. From this point I can bid on the water supply contract from the US government and other entities.
We are trying to work with the appropriations committee to put us into the 2008 budget for foreign affairs aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East. If we get the support we need we will set up a hard funded project that pushes water purification, high-speed internet access, mail systems, banking, and American business practices in northern Iraq. That would be a great coup-de-grace for us.
So now all of my plans are out there in the open. That is what I am working towards. It is not the easiest thing for me to work on but it is what I am doing.
For those of you who think I am insane, I agree. For those of you who think I am doing a great thing, I hope so. For those of you who think I am great for doing this, well let’s just say that if I did nothing but good deeds for the rest of my life I would still not be even. I thank God every day for being full of mercy.
These past few weeks have been stuffed with hard work. I am; renovating the electrical side of a restaurant, trying to sell Big Blue, working on bids for the US government supply contracts, getting all of my licenses and numbers for working with the government, and trying to have fun with the Sorenson boys.
Update on Big Blue: On Monday a nice Mexican man named Andreas and I are going to the bank to exchange Big Blue for Cash. That will be nice.
I have had a couple bites on the Saturn. One nice lady named Ruby said she would like to take it off my hands. That would be nice, and I hope things work out.
In preparation for going to Iraq I will be selling my apartment as well. My roommate is paying off his rent by working on my house. On the 23rd of October I am going to list my house for $352,000. I am hoping to get $340,000 to $350,000 for my house. As I owe $234,000 on the house, this will make a nice little profit.
I am teaching Sam Sorenson some of the finer arts to wood-working. As of right now we have built a shroud for one AC unit and are going to finish up the other Monday night.
These shrouds are required by a certain housing development. The owner of the property requires that all AC units have shrouds built around them to make them look like the rest of the property. This is the same owner who put central-air in to all of the end units but did not put any air-conditioning in the middle units. This guy might have passed the “How to Get Rich in America” class but did not even enroll in “Common Sense for Dummies.”
As some of you know, I will be moving to Iraq in December. To do this I need to sell Big Blue. I have redrafted these two ads for that purpose. What do you think of them?

This week is the start of a new life for me. No longer constrained by the shackles of military service I can surge forth into a bright new world unencumbered by the mind tethers so rigidly emblazoned on the creativity of the interesting. In a shorter term – I no longer have such a short leash.
Last week I was given the joys of leaving the military service. The joy that I felt allowed my to whistle my way through long lines, skip my way from appointment to appointment, and wallow in good will towards all men as I dealt with the joyous employees down at the government agencies. In short my week was a wonderful concoction of abstracts that bubbled up into gourmet feast of experience.
There were a few things I learned in my past week as I hope to do in all weeks. The first lesson I learned is that if you smile, say yes ma’am and yes sir a lot, people will do almost anything for you. The second lesson I learned is that patience is a virtue that knows no race, political affiliation, religion, class, or sex.
Progress on the American Development Center has been the other thing really centering my life this past week. I am not sure what we are going to do in full, but I do have a few plans. My first desire is to get over to Kurdistan and set up shop. Once I am there I can learn a few more things about the area and what we can do. What I would like to do is talk with the governor and set up microwave towers all around Kurdistan. While I am training a team of local Kurds to do this I will also be networking with other Kurds to assist in the parcel program. I will set up a brick and mortar site in Dohuk first and then expand it to the other five universities. If I company can be raised on blood and sweat alone then we are golden.
This past week has been full of running around. There sure is a lot of paperwork involved in getting out of the Navy.
Job problem is solved. I am working for the University as a Database Administrator and New Business Consultant. Things should go well in that realm.
Just to get rid of me the Navy decided to pay me a lot of money in a severance package. I should be able to live for a few weeks off of that money.
I am going to be selling my truck, finding someone to take over my lease on my SUV, and selling my home all in the next few months. The sooner I sell the big truck the better. If any of you out there know someone who wants a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 HEMI, Quad Cab, Long Bed with a 6” lift and 35” Tires – please let me know. I will give them a great deal at only $27,000. It is in Kona, Hawaii at this time but I could have the military move it to anyplace in route from Hawaii to Wisconsin for free.
For those of you who have been paying attention to my Intuitive Egghead site, I am sorry for not writing. These past few days have been hectic. As soon as the nightmare is over I will continue writing interesting dissections of the TRIZ methods for those nagging questions that need answers.
Most of all my life is going great. I really appreciate my sister Lori more and more each day. She is an inspiration to me and keeps me grounded. That may sound corny to anyone reading this but I don’t care. I love my sister and I am not afraid to say it.
Sorry that I have not written lately. My hairless pink pattukie has been fading away and away. To put that in non-gross layman’s terms: I have been working my butt off.
Those of you who know anything about my military situation know that I was supposed to be out of the Military last February. Yet I was so valuable to them that they wanted to keep me longer.
CHANGE!!!!
The Navy has finely realized how valuable I really am and have given me my walking papers. On the 22nd of August at 2400 hours I will have served my last in the US Military. On the 23rd of August I will be a free man. Jobless but free.
My brother Steve is buying a Refrigeration company in Kailua-Kona and he would like me to come over and manage that. I have had job offers from a high-rise crane company to go to whatever location I want for one year and then come back to Honolulu and run the local office. There is a power production plant here in Hawaii that needs an engineering manager and is considering me for the job. I was called by a couple financial companies that want me to come and work for them as a financial consultant veering towards the technical trades.
With all of these options you would think that I would be most ecstatic about my future. Well I am ecstatic, but not for the same reasons that you may think. It is my goal to work on finishing my degree by December with the MGIB. I will draw unemployment for a short while. Then I will call on some of my friends and see if I can pound nails through boards or install AC units/ducting/piping runs/insulation/electrical runs/concrete work, anything that gives me money for working. I will be spending a lot of my time studying just to get my degree finished.
So this is an update of me. There is more to come in the near future as well.
This weekend has been very nice. My sister Lori and I visited 2 farmers markets and China Town. I found a great place that has fresh Sushi cut fish. Couple that with the fresh vegetables found around the corner and a great supply of noodles, I do not need to go anywhere else.
Tonight while I was lying in my bed I heard a distinct sound of gunfire. First I heard three pops and then a double tap. Maybe tomorrow I will read about it in the paper.
On Monday I have to give military training to a bunch of nuke mechanics. I am sure this will be fun as nuclear engineering mechanics like me are notorious for being hecklers and goof-offs. This will be payback for all of the crap I gave other instructors.

My passion for learning about TRIZ and my job working with the Quality Assurance Department in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard are aligning themselves together. The QA department is not running at full efficiency and I am working with the officer who is trying to change that. My goal is to apply TRIZ principles to work with the QA department and solve our working problems. Once we can prove how efficient TRIZ is at finding solutions we can start to use it all over the shipyard.

Even though I was not hit by a real circus wagon I sure feel like it. The past few days have been filled with maladies, aching muscles, and a comical array of mishaps that belong inside a tent with three rings.
My weeklong wack-a-long started with putting in an Air Conditioner at a house in Kailua (ki’ lua`). The first AC went in with nary a problem. This simplicity is of course the knelling of uncertain future. Installation done. Pre-check SAT. Air Conditioner – will not turn on! What?! How can that be? Mumbled words of decorum’s omission were uttered under breath of blackened furry. Oh, well I am sure the next one will be better.
Putting in the second AC unit I realized that the wall I am supposed to hang this unit on is only pressboard backed up by 20 inches of pre-stressed concrete. In case you are not sure what that is, the next time you are driving on a freeway that was built to withstand the constant barrage of 2 ton SUV’s parading on its face for years……. that is what pre-stressed concrete is. Now I needed to drill a 3” diameter hole through it.
Four hours, two gallons of water, one cracked rib, dirty arms, reddened eyes, gritting teach, 10 LBS later I was through the wall. The rest of the install went swimmingly until I remembered that the units did not have adequate power to them.
Savior arrived in a smiling visage and car mechanics grease. A good friend came over to the house and beat me with the experience stick showing me that 110VAC that is paired in phase does not make 220VAC. I need to put them at alternating current to allow 220VAC to occur. What a great friend. (If some of you did not know what I said with all of the VAC and number talk – email me, I would be glad to explain it.) Now that my electrical problem was fixed I tried the AC’s again.
SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!
The fist unit ran like a charm. Cool air blowing, fan spinning, perfect temperatures at the return and supply line for refrigerant. Success and bliss could once again chirp with the birds and shine with the sun.
Now back to the second unit which for some reason did not want to lay on the wall correctly. After some encouragement I convinced the unit to lay where it was supposed to lay. It humbly submitted to my seduction and agreed to lie where it was.
Remember that first unit? The one that is now running like a Ferrari through the streets of Lemans? Well is decided to rain on my happy day. This is not a metaphor either. The AC was literally raining on the floor and walls all around it. It seems that the vinyl tubing that I was using did not mate perfectly with the drain line on the AC unit. Instead it backed up, created excess pressure, and relieved itself inside of the unit. Can you say AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! three times real fast? I know I can.
At this point I had already been working on these units for 12 hours that day. My brain was a lump of garbage laying next to me in a heap. My tongue was lapping at the particles of oxygen that seemed to not want to make it into my mouth. My head was keeping a beat for the lines of sweat marching their way down my back. Then of course there were the 20LB weights tied to my eyelids laughing at my struggles to maintain wakefulness.
The gracious owner realized that I had been working my gorgeous little fanny off most of the day and told me to cut it off for the day. “Rest,” he said, “come back and start again another day.” These seemed to be the sweetest words ever spoken by a human. So I heeded this 11th commandment and went home to bath in the luxury of sleep.
Of course the next day I did feel like I was hit by a circus wagon.
I know you would rather have me say your stocks are skyrocketing (or maybe your broker) but sometimes I say silly things. Of course the rocketing in the sky by the fall might bring images of rockets red glare, or bombs bursting in the error. That is not what I am talking about here. Tonight I went and saw the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Truth. Now no matter what his faults were as a politician Al does quite a good job pf presenting his point. I would have to say I was pleased.
In case you are not aware that Al Gore has put out a movie I will fill you in. An Inconvenient Truth is a movie about the environment and human’s impact on it. I have always known that there is a problem but I was not aware of the details of it until this movie. I still have to do some fact checking before I go quoting Al Gore’s numbers to any of my buddies. Last time I just believed him my computer geek buddies let me know that I was sadly mistaken.
If any of you would are thinking about going and seeing this movie I would really recommend it. I have not gone to the theatre in a while but this trip was well worth it. It was entertaining and informative. I will actually now go forth and try to become more CO2 conscious and try to limit the amount that I burn. Who knows, maybe it will make a difference!
Last night instead of going to sleep I was thinking of the four archetypes and their relation to voting. If you do not know there are four major archetypes in this world. You have the guardians who hold all the keys. Then there is the Healers who have the hearts. Next is the Warriors who are the bullets in the gun. Lastly would be the Wizards who do all the thinking for everyone. (Can you guess what type I am?)
The Guardians and the Warriors make up roughly 70% of the population. These are the percent of the population that politicians are not concerned with. Warriors for the most part do not vote, because they could not be bothered with things like that. Guardians vote along party lines and never really deviate from their chosen tribe. Examples of Guardians would be staunch die hard republicans like business owners and staunch liberals like university professors. No amount of rational thinking or debate will change their vote.
Now the 30% of the population that is left is made up of Healers and Wizards. These are the votes that are up for grabs. Healers will throw their vote at the party that represents whatever thing they are the most sensitive about. Now the Wizards are the thinkers. This type will overanalyze everything. Voting records come into questions. Past experiences to deal with future problems. The list could go on forever. Politicians are glad that Wizards only make up 15% of the voting population and can be countered by pointing enough warriors and pulling the trigger.
Now I am not sure what I am going to do with any of this knowledge, but it is something that I have been thinking about. Of course as these are just midnight musings there is a great possibility that I am wrong.
